Laarni Vinas

Attorney

“Working for the firm has affirmed that I am goal-oriented and I am committed to see things through. Since the work entails strict deadlines, I know I always have to deliver my work-product in a timely manner.”

What were the most difficult aspects of adjusting to life in Japan initially?

I had to relearn everything, from understanding street signs, to learning to read restaurant menus, to getting used to the value of money, to adjusting to the work ethics of the Japanese. And since I do not speak the language, I also had difficulty communicating with the locals. However, I soon learned that even though I cannot speak Japanese, Osakans go out of their way to help strangers.

What have been your fondest experiences in Japan?

Traveling with my family in the Kansai region. We experienced eating the famous Kobe beef together, visiting the lovely temples in Kyoto and walking around the Osaka Castle during autumn season.

I am looking forward to experience ...

Sky-diving in Tokyo! I've always been afraid of heights but I'm up for the challenge.

How would you describe your co-workers during your initial time at work?

They are extremely hard-working. Seeing my co-workers stay late almost everyday to finish their tasks pushed me to perform better and contribute effectively to the team.

What work skills and habits have you learned or improved from your time here thus far?

To think out-of-the-box. I am exposed to various issues wherein I have to come up with creative and innovative solutions to satisfy the client demands while still upholding the firm's commitments.

What are the challenging or difficult aspects of your work?

During a normal work-day, unexpected tasks turn up which means I would have to adjust my work schedule to accommodate these more urgent matters. Despite this, the expectation is still to produce the output swiftly and within the deadlines without sacrificing quality.

What is the most important thing that working at the Firm has taught you about yourself?

Working for the firm has affirmed that I am goal-oriented and I am committed to see things through. Since the work entails strict deadlines, I know I always have to deliver my work-product in a timely manner.

What advice would you give to entry level recruits?

Manage your expectations because work is really a tough slog. Accepting this job means you have to commit to three years of hard and serious work in an unfamiliar territory. There will be times when you feel tempted to leave, which is only natural, but the unparalleled amount of exposure, experience and expertise that you're developing will banish such thoughts.
