Meet Our Talent
Karen Muga
IP Assistant
What was the most difficult aspect of adjusting to work in Japan?
Like all major transitions, the initial period of adjustment to living and working in Japan was the most challenging. Everything, including IP work, was just so foreign at first. A willingness to experience and learn new things, as well as keeping an open mind, greatly helped with the transition. Also my former colleagues at SY provided guidance, and that helped me to adjust quickly to life in Japan.
How was Japan in reality to what you had imagined before you arrived?
It was so much more, and then some! Experiencing the usual stuff that one generally associate with Japan was great (i.e., Japanese tradition, culture, technology, crowded cities, crazy fashion, etc.), but it was the kindness and modesty of the people I met over the course of my stay that left an indelible impression.
What has been your fondest experience in Japan?
I love photography, so I used to spend my weekends walking around Nara or Kyoto taking photos of random things. The Japanese countryside is very scenic! During the cold months I frequently went onsen-hunting with friends (Tip: There are many hot springs around Kyoto, and it's just a mere 30-minute train ride from Osaka. Or go visit Beppu for a proper onsen experience.). I also seized the opportunity to travel outside the Kansai region and Japan during the long weekends and holidays.
When I was not at work, I was ...
Usually enjoying some quiet time in my apartment, out for a walk, or bonding with friends over great food.
What were your co-workers like?
I have to say that the people I met at SY are some of the most intelligent and hard working people I know. I felt a bit intimidated when I first joined the Firm, but everyone was really supportive and generous in sharing their knowledge about work that I quickly found my footing. My former colleagues were always willing to help out no matter how busy they were. Needless to say, I made many good friends at the Firm. I still keep in touch with the friends I made while working at SY, even though we're now scattered in different countries.
What sort of work did you get and was it challenging?
I was entrusted with a substantial amount and great variety work as soon as I was able to handle it. Work at SY certainly was very challenging - it required me to think on my feet. Intellectual property is a fast-paced field and technology changes all the time, therefore it is essential that the Firm deliver quick results to their clients. You can definitely feel the atmosphere of urgency and activity once you step inside the Firm.
What is the most important thing that working at SY has taught you about yourself?
Working at SY has taught me to stretch and challenge myself, and to always believe in my ability to do things. I learned that you can only realize your true potential if you willingly take on new challenges. Do not just go through an experience but rather own it.
What one piece of advice you would offer to incoming recruits?
Be ready to work hard. The learning curve at the Firm is quite steep - do not get discouraged. Learn from your seniors and listen to their advice. Make friends and enjoy the experience! At times you might encounter some frustrating situations - as anyone living in a foreign country should expect. Maintaining a good humor, however, will take you a long way.
