Martin Heymann

IP Attorney

“As with any new job, especially one overseas, taking the job is risky and it might not work out. However, if it does, the job's a unique and life-changing experience.”

How were your first few weeks in Japan?

Very intense, but not as hard as I thought they would be. I remember taking on the subway system successfully, and buying weird snacks at the supermarket.

What was the most difficult aspect of adjusting to work and life in Japan initially?

Office culture and attitudes are very different to Australian offices, and the hours are longer. Outside of the office, there's a language gap that's especially challenging at the start - restaurant menus are particularly scary.

What were your fondest leisure experiences in Japan?

Skydiving, camping, making it to the top of Mt. Fuji (the way down not so fondly remembered), being able to visit other parts of Japan and Asia, and eating good sushi.

When I am not at work, I am ...

Looking for Korean fried chicken in unlikely places.

What sort of work did you get and was it challenging?

I had a very great variety of work - I learnt about everything from a sports equipment patent to the trademark system of Zanzibar. It was definitely challenging, but I enjoyed the challenge.

What did you like most about your work?

The variety and novelty of the work, and the quality and ambition of the clients. Working with a diverse team of people and being able to utilize their strengths.

What is the most important thing that working at SY has taught you about yourself?

I'm more adaptable than I thought I was. I get on with a wider variety of people than I ever thought I did.

What advice would you give to incoming recruits?

As with any new job, especially one overseas, taking the job is risky and it might not work out. However, if it does, the job's a unique and life-changing experience.
