Meet Our Talent

Sophie Su

Computer/EE Technology Specialist

“There are always ways to improve yourself and always new tasks and projects. This is definitely never a boring place to be, and I'm glad that I can be a part of innovation and protecting it. It is easy to get along and get help from my colleagues. The Firm is a very dynamic workplace with a short and rapid decision chain. What I love about my job is every day is different and brings a different set of challenges that need to be overcome.”

What was the most difficult aspect of adjusting to work in Japan?

I had very little problems in adjusting as the Japanese way of life and culture is not too different from my homeland. I knew that the office professional environment was very fast paced and after I settled down to the workday routine with the support of everyone in the Firm, I managed to adjust.

How was the initial apartment move-in experience?

It was easy and stress free. The housing for the probation period was organized completely by the office and I moved in immediately after landing on Kansai Airport. The apartment had high speed internet (password and ID was provided), washing machine, kitchenette, fridge and all necessary fixtures. Everything was online from day one.

How did you cope with the stresses of working and living in Japan?

Judo and chilling with friends on the weekends and holidays. Being able to do Judo in Japan is a dream came true for me. Osaka food is not as great as Taiwanese food but it's still pretty close.

What has been your fondest leisure experience in Japan?

Shirahama beach at Wakayama. It was a really nice beach, the water temperature was perfect and the local seafood and oranges were amazing. I highly recommend visiting that beach during the summer time, it was a very relaxing experience.

What sort of work did you get and was it challenging?

Everyone starts by performing the smaller, less time-sensitive tasks but they were still an essential part of work. I was given more and more responsibilities and was able to advance more quickly than I expected. It was very rewarding for me to take some of the burden off my colleagues, and to witness the positive impact I had on our team so soon after starting.

What did you like most about working?

There are always ways to improve yourself and always new tasks and projects. This is definitely never a boring place to be, and I'm glad that I can be a part of innovation and protecting it. It is easy to get along and get help from my colleagues. The Firm is a very dynamic workplace with a short and rapid decision chain. What I love about my job is every day is different and brings a different set of challenges that need to be overcome.

What is the most important thing that working at SY has taught you about yourself?

I was surprised at how quickly I was able to take on more responsibility and hit the ground running. I have learnt that positive confidence and enthusiasm is crucial in any work environment. When dealing with clients' tough problems, you have to decide to take one starting position for a solution and be prepared to be flexible and shape that solution to the client's problem.

What advice would you give to new recruits?

There are always tasks to be solved. The clients need their questions answered; we all need to tackle different assignments and more. No two days are the same, and you never know how the day will proceed. Of course there are some routine docketed matters to attend to during the course of a day, but there is a palpable exhilaration in having something new and exciting to do every day.
