Meet Our Talent

Rob McNaughton

IP Assistant

“Directly from university, I was looking for an organization that gave one the opportunity to work with experienced and talented people across many disciplines in a working environment that emphasizes teamwork and collaboration. Working here also provided me with the opportunities to reach my professional goals and to work with diverse people from all cultures and backgrounds, which is an invaluable skill. Having to come up with acceptable client solutions really challenges you to think outside of the box, so you will never be complacent in this position.”

What was the most difficult aspect of adjusting to life in Japan?

Perhaps the most difficult aspect, at least initially, is adjusting to the language gap. It was certainly a strange experience coming to a country where I had difficulty not only communicating with other people but also reading street signs and menus. Luckily, I have found that the Japanese people appreciate these difficulties and are often willing to go the extra mile to assist you if you are lost/confused. Likewise, I have found senior foreign staff were willing to impart some of their experience and wisdom to guide me through the issues that I faced.

What were your fondest leisure experiences in Japan?

I have enjoyed numerous entertaining and interesting leisure experiences during my time in Japan. However, I would have to say that my fondest memories involve my ski-trips to some of Japan's magnificent and powder-laden mountains. Since I come from a hot part of Australia, seeing snow for the first time, and then skiing on it, was an exhilarating experience and something I will never forget.

Less exciting, but certainly remembered fondly, have been my numerous day-trips to Kyoto. Since it is so close to Osaka, I have been to many World Heritage sites, many times, during many seasons. Other fun experiences include climbing Mt. Fuji to see the sun rise at dawn over Japan, and flying to Okinawa for a weekend of sun-bathing and swimming.

What did you like most about living in Osaka?

One of the benefits of living and working in Osaka is that it has provided me with an opportunity to enjoy many different world class or quirky restaurants and culinary experiences. I also like Osaka's vibrant nightlife and experiencing what is on offer with friends that I have met while living in Japan.

What sort of work did you get and was it challenging?

This job allows you to work with so many diverse people from around the country and the world. Coming up with solutions for a client really does force you to think outside of the box, so you will never be complacent in this position. If you want the opportunity to learn new things or take on more interesting work you have to step up to the wicket.

My work in unfair competition and trademarks has given me the opportunity to handle trademark work of some of the world's most prominent brands. The work I have performed has allowed me to gain real insight into the everyday legal and business challenges and expectations of these companies, which has been a rewarding experience.

What advice would you give to entry level recruits?

Any new entry level recruits should look to develop effective time management skills to assist in minimizing stress. SY is a fast-paced working environment with clients who expect us to take prompt and effective action to meet deadlines and protect their IP rights.

SY is a challenging but remarkable place to start a career. From the beginning, I had to tackle thought-provoking and demanding client matters, and the opportunity to work on trend-setting issues. No one hands you a profession on a silver platter. If you want the opportunity to learn new things or take on more interesting roles you have to step up to the wicket.

Luckily, I have found that living in Japan offers plenty of opportunities for avoiding and minimizing stress. There are many amazing restaurants and shops to visit, along with many beautiful and historic sites in the Kansai area; many of which are close to Osaka or a day trip at most.
