Meet Our Talent

Ian Teoh

Accounting Assistant

“There is the need to exercise a good degree of judgment, pragmatism and discretion due to the sensitive nature of the work... While being very demanding due to the myriad internal and external factors, the work is rewarding and creates a real sense of achievement.”

What was the most difficult aspect of adjusting to life in Japan?

The cultural differences and strict etiquette observed by Japanese amongst themselves. There's also the matter of standing on the right while on an escalator when you are in Kansai and the left when you are in Tokyo.

How is Japan in reality to what you had imagined before you arrived?

Nothing gleaned from hearsay, books or the internet truly prepared me for Japan. I have since become accustomed to the extreme street fashion sense of some outlier elements of Japanese society, and the intriguingly eccentric behavior put on display. In some respects, my expectations were surpassed and the experience as a whole has been very positive.

What did you like most about living in Osaka?

The hustle and bustle of Osaka and by and large the greater Kansai area – including Kyoto, Nara, Kobe and Wakayama. There is always something new to try, see or do on weekends and holidays. The extensive rail network makes it simple and hassle-free.

What were your fondest leisure experiences in Japan?

The highlights would be attending a solo exhibition by Mr. (a Kaikai Kiki artist) in Tokyo as well as my trip to Yokohama. The earthquake that I felt while gazing at the night view of the Minato Mirai district from Yokohama Landmark Tower deserves a special mention!

What sort of work did you get and was it challenging?

As a member of the Accounting team, the work varies from the operational (i.e. processing payments, administrative work, e-billing) to the demanding (i.e. dispute resolution, preparation of RFQs, assisting clients with annual or quarterly budget forecasting of their IP portfolio). The work product must be completed within strict client-imposed deadlines in addition to being error free. Actually there is a variety of operational assignments that ensures that I have daily contact and interaction with colleagues from all billing functions within our Firm. The rapport and contact with them on a daily basis reassures me that accounting stuff is not so banal after all! There is the need to exercise a good degree of judgment, pragmatism and discretion due to the sensitive nature of the work. While being very demanding due to the myriad internal and external factors, the work is rewarding and creates a real sense of achievement.

What advice would you give to entry level recruits?

Recruits should not expect to be mollycoddled and have their hand held every step of the way. You are not expected to have the correct answer all the time but you should have a position initially for discussion and not expect to be spoonfed always. Those who display initiative and are able to quickly learn and adapt will be a good fit at SHUSAKU YAMAMOTO.
