How was Osaka in reality to what you had imagined before you started working in Osaka?
I had studied in Osaka for several years before I started working, so I have been accustomed to the Japanese work ethic as well as living in Japan in general. However, after joining this firm, I saw a whole different level of work ethic which allowed me to push myself to be more responsible in a fast-paced group-oriented environment.
How would you describe co-workers when you arrived?
I would say they are quite friendly and very competent. I feel that I can approach them whenever I am unsure about something. Even when I get a hard time, I know that it is because they would like to see me improve, so I appreciate all their input -- negative and positive.
Do you feel like you're having an impact directly on the clients that you work for?
Yes, and it is especially a good feeling whenever a case I handle gets allowance to be patented. On the other hand, since our work directly affects our clients, we need to be very careful with everything that is put out to them.
When I am not at work, I ...
sleeping, playing musical instruments, or learning some language (by watching shows & playing games).
What are the challenging or difficult aspects of your work?
For me, the challenging part is to balance speed and quality, because my personality is more to take my time with things, so I needed to constantly remind myself to hustle. Even then, I need to be careful so that my work is not rushed and low quality. So the balance of speed and quality is challenging.
What is the best thing about being a part of a global team?
It is great to be able to work together with many different people from across the world as well as learn about how patent law differs from country to country.
I am looking forward to ...
hiking up Mt. Fuji or cycling trip to Tokyo!
What three words describe the Firm best? First in English, then in your mother tongue.
Efficient, Diverse, Professional (Efisien, Beragam, Profesional).
What have been your 3 fondest leisure experiences in Japan?
Cycling around Lake Biwa, karaoke with friends, and date to Osaka Aquarium.
What is your most treasured possession that you've obtained during your stay in Osaka thus far and why?
It has to be my degree because it encapsulates all the 5 years of joys and hardships of my studies in Osaka, as well as the friends I made along the way.
What advice would you give to a potential new colleague?
I would advise them to really take the time to learn from every single case and really review them even after they have concluded, taking note of all mistakes. Even though no case is truly the same, you start to notice some patterns that will help you with the speed and quality.
