How was working in Osaka in reality to what you had imagined before you arrived?

Having lived in Tokyo for half a year as an exchange student, I imagined that Osaka would be a smaller version of Tokyo. However, I soon discovered that Osaka has a completely different, "rough around the edges", yet friendly and warm atmosphere and charm.

Do you feel like you're having an impact directly on the clients that you work for?

Of course. Every interaction working with the clients will shape the end product, and will ultimately affect their business and their goals. This means that every step along the way, including advice and analysis is important in making sure that we can meet the clients' expectations.

What are the challenging or difficult aspects of your work?

An ordinary day can mean unexpected contingencies or unique circumstances, which require a great deal of flexibility and speed whilst maintaining the utmost quality. Moreover, working in Japan also brings with it the unfamiliarity of interacting with unfamiliar foreign laws or practices. These challenges are compounded coming from a non-intellectual property background.

What were the initial difficulties of adjusting to life in Japan?

Getting used to riding in crowded trains, open plan offices and the fast-paced, critical workstyle are among the most difficult things to adjust to when working in Japan. That said, these are things you eventually become used to, and for the better.

How would you describe your co-workers?

My first impression of my co-workers is the breadth and diversity of their knowledge and drive. However, it is their helpfulness, patience and attentiveness that truly enriches the experience I have working alongside other professionals.
