Meet Our Talent

Tan Lee Sia

Biotechnology Specialist

“The clients' technologies and issues that I work on are never the same. I love solving problems and I thoroughly enjoy working as part of a driven team and taking responsibility for my own portfolio of matters from early on.”

What was the most difficult aspect of adjusting to work in Japan?

The initial period was the toughest due the lack of company and language. However, once you have made friends at work, working becomes more enjoyable. Also the main adjustment downside is waking up to get to work by 9 in the morning - even though my commute is 15 minutes door to door - because like most PhDs I observed vampire hours in at the lab.

How did you cope with the stresses of working and living in Japan?

Making most out of the free time and holidays to travel with colleagues to places within Japan and traveling to neighboring countries like Korea and Taiwan. I also enjoy cooking for my friends.

What has been your fondest experience in Japan?

Having Hanami parties with our fellow Japanese colleagues during spring under cherry blossom trees at Osakajo.

What advice would you give to entry level recruits?

Be open to criticism as they allow you to learn from errors. Work hard, play harder (although do make sure you get the work done first and if you don't, someone will make sure you'll never forget) The Firm looks for people who can become independently minded experts, not a yes man or yes woman.

What did you like most about living and working in Osaka?

Living and working in Osaka provides me with the flexibility to travel around Japan to visit World Heritage Sites in Japan and enjoy the beautiful sceneries of Japan at their peak (e.g. cherry blossom or momiji seasons).

I was struck by the fact that many applicants seek patent protection over everything that can conceivably be of value, whereas back at the lab, I would have never thought that that could be patented. The clients' technologies and issues that I work on are never the same. I love solving problems and I thoroughly enjoy working as part of a driven team and taking responsibility for my own portfolio of cases from early on. I'm looking forward to carrying on with a rewarding career in the patent and intellectual property field and always seeking value in science and innovation .

What one piece of advice you would offer to someone looking to work at Shusaku Yamamoto?

The Firm is a challenging but good place to push and test yourself. Remember that it's not good enough that people like you, you've got to get the job done.
