What were the initial difficulties of adjusting to life in Osaka?

Language barrier and different ways of doing things in Japan made it more difficult to adjust initially. For example, I encountered some difficulties to settle things like phone contract and bank cards. However, once I got over the hump, living in Japan is generally quite convenient.

When I am not at work, I am ...

reading books, checking out supermarkets, catching up with friends, try new restaurants and travel.

I am looking forward to experience ...

sceneries and life in different countrysides of Japan.

Do you feel like you're having an impact directly on the clients that you work for?

Yes, definitely! Every piece of advice given requires thorough analysis of the inventions, a solid knowledge of local patent law and practice, and a clear understanding of our clients’ commercial interest. Therefore, I believe that our work makes a direct and positive impact on our clients’ ability to obtain patents and protect their patent rights, thus contributing towards their business goals.

What is the most important thing that working at the Firm has taught you about yourself?

A greater sense of responsibility. Since our advice and actions are important to our clients’ business success, I am learning daily to sharpen my decision-making and be confident in my judgement and solutions. I am also learning to improve my ability to process and grasp the essence of the situations in a limited amount of time as well as to be flexible and effective in communicating with our clients.

What are the challenging or difficult aspects of your work?

Fast-paced work environment that requires focus and good time management. There are days when we need to juggle many things at once, so classifying jobs based on their urgency and importance is a must to get things done well and on time.

What have been your three fondest leisure experiences in Japan?

Experienced the beautiful firsts of the 3 seasons in Japan: autumn foliage, snow and cherry blossoms.

What is the best thing about being a part of a global team?

Opportunities to make personal and professional connection with people from all over the world.

What three characteristics describe the Firm best? First in English, then in your mother tongue?

Professional, Speed and Quality. Chuyen nghiep, Nhanh chong va Chat luong.

What advice would you give a potential new colleague?

There might be a lot to take in at the start, especially if you come from a scientific background without any prior IP knowledge. But don’t be afraid of asking questions as seniors are very helpful, and don’t be disheartened by difficulties. This job is intellectually stimulating and rewarding once you overcome the difficulties and start making contributions.
