Meet Our Talent

Gina Tresidder

IP Assistant

“If you're thinking of applying to work at this firm, remember it is not going to be easy. It is a high-pressured, no-nonsense work environment and it does not suit everyone. That said, if you are adaptable and like hard work, you can thrive. And of course, Japan is a wonderful place to explore on your weekends and holidays!”

What was the most difficult aspect of adjusting to work in Japan?

Even though I had spent quite a bit of time in Japan prior to work, I had to adjust quickly to the way the firm operated. The work culture at SHUSAKU YAMAMOTO is fast-paced and intense. New recruits are expected to learn quickly and hit the ground running. I found this exciting but also quite challenging.

How did you cope with the stresses of working and living in Japan?

I was fortunate to make some really close friends both inside and outside the firm. I also made it a point to continue my hobbies through joining local clubs and groups. It was great to get to know locals and other foreigners outside of work.

What has been your fondest experience in Japan?

There have been so many! The joy of slipping into a hot spring after coming in from the snow; travelling to Turkey with a group of Japanese friends from my dance class; long nights of raucous, off-key karaoke...

What did you like most about living and working in Osaka?

The food. There is an abundance of all kinds of restaurants and you are really spoilt for choice. The people in Osaka are laid back and fun, and the city hustle and bustle in Osaka is not overwhelming even though there are several million people commuting around Osaka every day.

I was interested in intellectual property and working at the firm gave me the opportunity to tackle work for clients from around the world in many different industries. The sheer volume of varied, challenging work means you cannot help but absorb knowledge and sharpen your skills very quickly.

What advice would you give to entry level recruits?

If you're thinking of applying to work at this firm, remember it is not going to be easy. It is a high-pressured, no-nonsense work environment and it does not suit everyone. That said, if you are adaptable and like hard work, you can thrive. And of course, Japan is a wonderful place to explore on your weekends and holidays!
