Belinda Mok

Biotechnology Specialist

“My 3 years working at Shusaku Yamamoto was one of the best opportunities given to me as this has really helped me in establishing my career path. I have also made many great friends throughout my 3 years working for the Firm, many of whom I still keep in touch with.”

What was the most difficult aspect of adjusting to work in Japan?

The difference in work culture, particularly having to adjust from a slow to a fast paced working environment, within a short period of time. You must learn to be disciplined and make lists or a docket of work items or things you need to do, and one will feel less overwhelmed with what you need to do.

How did you cope with the stresses of working and living in Japan?

Being broadminded and working amongst supportive team members helped with the stress of working in Japan. With regard to living in Japan, the close group of friends I have made whilst working in Japan really made my living in Japan memorable. Shopping in Japan helped with de-stress as well.

What did you like most about living and working in Osaka?

Being exposed to the Japanese work culture and lifestyle was truly an amazing and an unforgettable experience. Also, now that I am back in Malaysia, I really do miss the four seasons in Osaka.

You will get the opportunity to work with fantastic technologies and experience solving a broad set of issues that will be interesting, challenging and provide lots of value to your own knowledge and experience. Although members of the Firm or the people you are working with are busy, they are never too busy to help. I have found my team members and all the colleagues I have worked with always willing to help. You will work hard and have lots of fun at the appropriate time.

What has been your fondest experience in Japan?

Hanami in the parks and going for fireworks festival in Japan.

What advice would you give to entry level recruits?

To have an open mind and a thirst for learning new things, be it a different culture or work nature. My 3 years working at Shusaku Yamamoto was one of the best opportunities given to me as this has really helped me in establishing my career path. I have also made many great friends throughout my 3 years working for the Firm, many of whom I still keep in touch with.

As with many things in life, you only get something out of it by how much you invest in yourself. My limited but packed time at the Firm gave me an staggering amount of experience - to people, difficult problems, technologies, knowledge, and challenging questions - and it motivated me to navigate and grow through my time in Osaka.
