Biotechnology Specialist

“Working in such a fascinating and dynamic environment keeps me on top of my game and I know that I can succeed anywhere in the biomedical innovation world after my time here.”

What do you like about working in the Firm?

The scope and responsibility of the work was slightly more than I had envisioned but you will feel a remarkable sense of accomplishment when you achieve the good results.

Like anywhere else, one will settle down to a work routine but working with innovation means that one's work schedule could change in a second. This makes it exciting. Working in such a fascinating and dynamic environment keeps me on top of my game and I know that I can succeed anywhere in the biomedical innovation world after my time here.

What did you like most about living and working in Osaka?

It's a great city to live in (easy access to anywhere, friendly people, great view from the office - localization is a plus), but in particular I love the gastronomic variety in Osaka.

I live in Tsuruhashi, one of Osaka's most interesting neighborhoods and the atmosphere is lively and fun - full of Korean BBQ, ramen and sushi restaurants, izakaya, standing shot bars - even an English-styled pub - and the famous Tsuruhashi Korean market where you can get great Korean groceries and delicacies.

What was the most difficult aspect of adjusting to work in Japan?

I was given substantial responsibilities and opportunities to push and test my abilities always. It's a little intimidating in the beginning but it's the best way to learn and work in a Japanese style.

What has been your fondest experience in Japan?

Traveling around Japan: indulging in pineapple dessert in Okinawa, skiing in Hokkaido, surfing in Wakayama, hiking up Mount Fuji; skydiving in Tokyo, as well as the easy access to other Asian countries like China, Korea and Taiwan for amazing sightseeing during holidays and long weekends.

How did you cope with the stresses of working and living in Japan?

Even though I am constantly presented with science or legal challenges, by working closely with my team members, most challenges can be surpassed and that is energizing. Also regular exercise and many quick overseas, Okinawa vacations. Actually quite a few Japanese national holidays are on Monday and they create long weekends which are always good too.

What advice would you give to entry level recruits?

The Firm's high-paced performance-based culture takes effort to adjust to and it is very different from life in university. You must be disciplined and adaptable. A small minority won't make it but the majority that do have a really rewarding and memorable time.

There are many opportunities to quickly immerse yourself into fascinating new technologies, develop your overall skills. The opportunities come thick and fast and even though this was a little unnerving when I started but now I really like it.
