Meet Our Talent

Aaron Koh

Computer/EE Tech Specialist

“I have now worked in three different countries in this field and I have to say that there is no better place to begin than at Shusaku Yamamoto. I don't mean that it's a walk in the park (it's definitely not), but it's the invaluable work experience that you will gain working at the Firm.”

What was the most difficult aspect of adjusting to work in Japan?

Coming straight from uni to work at the Firm was a big transition in terms of work culture and time management and one must be ready to become accustomed to a structured & formal setting. The Firm's pace is fast and furious and you must possess the intellectual and emotional stamina to tackle it.

However you don't have to worry about accommodation and other moving matters as the Firm's transition package and probation housing arrangements made it very easy to set up in Osaka.

How did you cope with the stresses of working and living in Japan?

Even though I did not know anyone in Osaka before I came, it was easy to meet people and form friendships with co-workers and others. With the good and close relationships that I built, we took part in many recreational activities. My practice group - the denki team was close-knit and we supported each other very well and this teamwork is the basis of the culture at the Firm.

Living in Japan for me was truly enjoyable. Japan is rich in culture and there are so many things to learn and experience. I am glad that I had the opportunity to experience living in Japan and at the same time, kickstart my career in the IP field.

What has been your fondest experience in Japan?

It must be snowboarding in fresh deep powder of Niseko, Niigata and Nagano - there is no snow in Perth and Singapore and I really really miss freestyling on the slopes.

Japan also has plenty of amusement parks like the super roller coaster Steel Dragon 2000 in Nagashima. Climbing Mt. Fuji was an amazing experience - it was all worth it when you reach the top just in time for the sunrise.

The thing I do miss most is the Japanese culture - polite, friendly and always welcoming (regardless of whether you know their language).

What advice would you give to entry level recruits?

This is not a light cushy fun placement and don't waste everyone's time if you are using the job as an excuse for a short holiday.

To anyone who is looking to jumpstart their career, Shusaku Yamamoto is a great starting point. There was not a day on during my time there that I felt like I didn't contribute. The work you do is meaningful to clients, adds value to the Firm and most importantly develops you with skills you can take into your future work and career.

What did you like most about living and working in Osaka?

See above. Osaka is a nice manageable size and there are plenty of dining options and great food everywhere. As for working there, I learned that when you demonstrate talent and success in your area of responsibility, the Firm is quick to recognize that.

What advice would you offer to someone looking to work at Shusaku Yamamoto?

If you genuinely love science and technology but do not like being in the lab, patenting and IP is the best alternative and the Firm is the best introduction to this exciting field. I have now worked in three different countries in this field and I have to say that there is no better place to begin than at Shusaku Yamamoto. I don't mean that it's a walk in the park (it's definitely not), but it's the invaluable work experience that you will gain working at the Firm.

I got enormous satisfaction in handling cutting edge technologies on a global scale and I had to learn about US, European, Korean and Chinese patent law. I learned a great deal about the day-by-day work and special patent projects and I have determined that my future was in patent law and easily obtained my professional qualification after my time at Shusaku Yamamoto.

If you are motivated and self-driven, this is a place with great opportunities. Get your application in as early as possible. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity - don't miss it!
