SY’s Patent Client Wins 2023 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine
Prof. Drew Weissman was the co-winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Professor Katalin Karikó for their groundbreaking research concerning nucleoside base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. The pioneering mRNA discovery contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times. The research that laid the foundation for mRNA vaccines targeting SARS-CoV-2 and is now being researched for other diseases, including HIV, cancer and HSV.
The Firm is honored and humbled that it was able to represent Professor Weissman, as an inventor, and the University of Pennsylvania in Japanese patent matters directed to this Nobel Prize winning mRNA discovery.
